Description
This calligraphy of Muigugok ga (Song of the Wuyi Mountain and Nine-bend River) is one of the most representative works of Yun Sun-geo (1596-1668), excellently showcasing the essential characteristics of his style; namely, the generous composition and layout of characters and rapid strokes. These characteristics, meanwhile, link him to Yang Sa-eon (1517-1584, pen-name: Bongnae), a 16th-century calligrapher acclaimed for his cursive script, as well as to the Tang-Dynasty calligrapher Huai Su (8th century) whose wild cursive style was emulated by Yang Sa-eon for the round movement of the brush all the while maintaining jungbongse (keeping the tip of the brush exactly in the middle of a stroke). This is a style that became newly popular in the 17th century in large-character cursive calligraphies, and had a considerable influence on the style of cursive calligraphies in the 18th century; something that makes the Muigugok ga of Yun Seo-geo highly interesting for art historians. This calligraphy is also the largest in the dimension of sheet, of all extant 17th-century Joseon calligraphies.
