Description

This is an ice storage place constructed with granite. Built lengthways from south to north, it has an entrance on a ridge facing the south. It resembles an ancient tomb. The frame for the entrance was made by trimming the long stone. After that, a wall was built behind the frame with a stone to shut out the external air, and the exterior was built by piling the stone. Then, after smoothing the stone wall with clay, earth was piled up on top. Constructed with leveled-out stones as the walls, the ceiling forms an arch with a huge stone placed between the four rainbow-shaped doors. Two ventilation holes are let on the ceilings with a cover installed in case of rain. The floor was made with even stones and equipped with a drainage way in the center. It is significant that such a small village as Hyeonpung has ice storage considering the fact that not every village had ice storage at that time. Thanks to the discovery of the foundation stone during reconstruction in 1982, it is known that ice storage was inaugurated in 1730.
