Description
This Buddha statue is kept inside the base stone, with its one side open, of the three-story stone pagoda of Hangwangsa Temple. Thick curled hair, a small round face, narrow shoulders, and a weak body make it possible to feel the figure of a monk practicing Zen meditation. The robe over the shoulders forms long parallel pleats hanging down, reaching both arms, making a soft curve at the belly covering the knees and legs. The shape of the hands is the jigwonin, which is the mudra symbolizing that the Buddha and the multitude are one, bending a left forefinger which demonstrates that it is a statue of Vairocana Buddha. The pedestal with the Buddha statue consists of a lotus-carved top, an octagonal middle pedestal, and the bottom pedestal. In view of the fact that it is more standardized and detailed than earlier statues of Buddha, it appears to have been made in the 10th century during the Goryeo era.
