Description
This is a clerical-script calligraphy of Gyeongjaejam (Jingzhaizhen in Chinese, Admonition for Mindfulness Studio) of Zhu Xi, written by Song Mun-heum (1710-1752), in the summer of 1751. It was written for Yeoil, in Neukcheongyedang, the house of his brother Song Myeong-heum. The text is in forty-four lines, each containing four characters, written on a horizontally long strip of paper, made by interconnecting several sheets of paper. A careful examination of the paper reveals, however, that the calligraphy was originally in lines of eight characters. The spaces between the characters are folded to create even intervals between them. Transcribed from a rubbing of the Cao Quanbei stele of the Eastern Han Period, the text is written in soft and elegant strokes. Song Mun-heum’s clerical script calligraphy had a tremendous influence on both his contemporaries and later generations of calligraphers, and this work is highly illustrative of his style.
