Description

This three-volume calligraphy album is a collection of Chinese and Korean poems written in seal script, by Yi In-sang (1710-1760, pen-name: Neunghogwan). Although his name In-sang and courtesy name Wollyeong are written here and there, as well as the titles of verses, no information is provided as to the circumstances in which Yi In-sang came to write them. The cover page bears the title Wollyeongpil (Calligraphy by Yi In-sang), with the indication that the album consists of three volumes provided beneath the title. The pages of the album are interconnected sheets like in a folded book, and are bound together with the cover page. Apart from the missing cover page of the first volume, the calligraphy album is in a rather decent condition for its age. This album affords a taste of the varied seal script style of Yi In-sang, from square-shaped characters in thick and forceful strokes to okjeojeon (pearl stick seal script) in fine and regular strokes and seal-script brushworks written with a stiff-hair brush, exuding a roughhewn charm. Yi In-sang greatly influenced renowned seal script calligraphers of later generations such as Yi Han-jin (pen-name: Gyeongsan) and Yu Han-ji (pen-name: Giwon). This is the largest collection of his works of all extant calligraphy albums of his.
