Description

The Buddha statues are carved on each of four sides of a rock, but currently it is almost impossible to identify the shape of the statues apart from the Buddha triad. The seated principal Buddha has the shape of a topknot rising high from the bald head. The face is oval with tight, fleshy cheeks. The robe over the shoulders hangs down making a thick soft curve from the belly onto the legs. It follows the historic style describing the type of face and the expression of the pleats. It is similar to the rock-carved Buddha triad in Gaheung-ri, Yeongju (Treasure No. 221). A flame pattern is carved on the brilliance surrounding the head. The carving is thought to have been made in the early years of Unified Silla.
