Description
Hapicheop is a calligraphic work by Jeong Yak-yong. Jeong composed and wrote this series of educational phrases for his two sons on pieces of fabric that his wife sent to him during his exile in Gangjin. The work was produced in July and September of 1810 (the 10th year of the reign of King Sunjo of the Joseon Dynasty) when Jeong was 49. Originally, this album was composed of four volumes, but only three volumes have survived. Two volumes of the calligraphic album Hapicheop include the prefaces written in July 1810 and in September 1810 while he was exiled in Gangjin. The motivation behind this work is included in the preface of Hapicheop, which states that he composed some notices for his two sons. In general, this album displays Jeong’s typical style of semi-cursive and cursive writing. Notably, the characters written in seal script and in clerical script in the third volume are rarely found in other calligraphic albums.
