Description
Jangseung beopsu (Index of Buddhist Sutras) is a reference book of Buddhist studies, containing a list of Buddhist scriptures in the Tripitaka Koreana to provide researchers with greater ease of access to the Buddhist canon. This book is an edition printed from woodblocks engraved in 1389 by an eminent Buddhist monk named Muhak (1327-1405) between the late Goryeo and early Joseon Periods, based on the edition published in 1365 by a Yuan monk named Xian Kesui. The book contains characters printed with worn-down types, revealing that it was printed during the early Joseon Period. This edition of Jangseung beopsu, reprinted during the Goryeo Period on the basis of the original work published in Yuan, contains a record of the background to its publication, thus providing an important source of knowledge on the history of Buddhism and the exchange of literature in East Asia.
