Description

Abhidharma mahavibhasa Sastra is a text explaining the various precepts of the Sarvastivada School of Buddhism, based on Abhidharma jnanaprasthana Sastra (Treatise on the Arising of Wisdom through the Abhidharma). This text became a reference for many other discourses on the Abhidharma that appeared in subsequent eras. The text is also known by its short name Mahavibhasa or Mahavibhasa Sastra. While the title at the beginning of the book is Abidalma Daebibasaron, the one at the end is Sarvastivada jnanaprasthana mahavibhasa Sastra. The book is said to have been compiled by Hyeopjonja (Kyo Sonja) and Beopgyu, and five hundred Arhats, and the compilation is said to have taken twelve years. The Mahavibhasa was translated into Chinese by Xuanzang, and the Chinese version consists of two hundred volumes. This sastra, to distinguish it from another 100-volume version of which sixty volumes have survived, is referred to as the new Vibhasa as opposed to the old Vibhasa designating the latter. The quality of printing is not excellent in this book printed on a paper of poor quality, with ink appearing darker or lighter on some pages. But, the book is generally well preserved. At the end of the volume, there is a rod, appearing to have been added sometime later in the past, and the edge of the sheet is cut into the shape of a swallow tail so that it can be easily rolled into a scroll. One of the copies printed with the first Tripitaka Koreana blocks, sometime in the 11-12th century, it is the only example of this text placed on display for public viewing.
