Description

Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra is a basic sutra of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, named Geumganggyeong in Korean, and is the second most widely read sutra aftetr the Prajnaparamita hridaya Sutra (The Heart Sutra) in Korea. This book was made by combining the version translated by the Chinese (Later Qin) Jiu mo luo shi (鳩摩羅什) with the interpretation of the Chinese (Ming) Chuan lao (川老). It was printed on mulberry paper, originally as a type of scroll, and reproduced in the form of a book measuring 56 cm by 19.1 cm. According to the prologue, the book was published by Yu Hyang and Gang In-bu with the help of the queen of King U. The prologue also states that Jidam was responsible for its publication and that Yi Saek composed the epilogue with a simple text about the publication background of this book, which was written by Gakji. The end of the book contains words of the Buddha, which were written to pray for enlightenment about the Buddha’s teaching and wishes; and which include, in particular, an elegy to the soul that describes the miraculous effect of praying to the Buddha, the like of which cannot be found in other books. The letters are seriously worn and the printing is unclear, indicating that it was printed in the early Joseon period, a long time after its engraving.
