Description

This royal edict was issued to Seong Seok-rin (1338∼1423), a civil minister active between the end days of the Goryeo Dynasty and the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty. Seong Seok-rin passed the state examination in 1357 (the 6th year of the reign of King Gongmin of the Goryeo Dynasty) and took up various governmental positions such as assistant master of the Syeonggyungwan, director of the Yemungwan, and Prime Minister (Yeonguijeong). As old friend of Yi Seong-gye, he also played an important role in bringing about a reconciliation between Yi Seong-gye (King Taejo) and Yi Bang-won (King Taejong). The edict was awarded by King Taejong to Seong Seok-rin to appoint him to the positions of Prime Minister and Director of the Gaeseong Magistracy on November 17, 1402 (the 2nd year of the reign of King Taejong). He subjugated the second Prince's rebellion (known as the Banggan Rebellion) in 1401 (the first year of the reign of King Taejong) and rendered distinguished services in King Taejong's accession to the throne. Thus, Seong Seok-rin was appointed a third-rank meritorious subject and installed as the Changnyeong buwongun (The Prince of the Court from Changnyeong). In October 1402, he was appointed as Prime Minister (Yeonguijeongbusa, later renamed as Yeonguijeong). The edict is printed with the names of government posts used at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty and the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty, along with its date of issuance, and is stamped with the royal seal (the seal of Joseon king). The text was written in a cursive style with tough, thick, high-quality paper made in Korea. The document measures 61.6 cm in width and 32 cm in length.
