Description
Daebanggwangbul hwaeomgyeong, which is also abbreviated to Hwaeomgyeong (Avatamsaka Sutra), contains the central idea that Buddha and all creatures are one, rather than many. The Avatamsaka Sutra, as the basic sutra of the Hwaeom Order of Korean Buddhism, was one of the most influential sutras in the establishment of Korean Buddhism along with the Lotus Sutra. This book was transcribed from volume 46 of the 80 volumes of the Zhou version of the Avatamsaka Sutra translated by Siksananda of the Tang Dynasty, which contains the first half of Bulbusauibeoppum (A Buddhist saint’s sermon about the wonders of Buddha’s teaching). Written in gold on indigo paper, it is a folding screen type of book (made by connecting the paper width-ways), and measures 28.3 cm by 758.2 cm when unfolded. The book is missing its original cover, which has been replaced with a new cover. The illustration, which summarizes the contents of the sutra in pictorial, is drawn in gold at the beginning of the volume, while the content of the sutra is elaborately written in gold. Although the bottom right of the illustration is slightly damaged, it is in good condition on the whole. There is no record of its publication, but it is estimated to have been printed in the 14th century during the Goryeo Dynasty, judging from the quality of the paper, illustration, and writing technique.
