Description

Daebuljeong suneungeomgyeong, or simply Neungeomgyeong (Suramagma Sutra), is the basic sutra that Korean monks learn in the course of their discipline. The main idea of the sutra is to understand what Buddha says by practicing it. It was copied from a Tang Dynasty text, and it combines five books out of 10 into one volume. It was published by order of King Taejo in the first year of the reign of King Taejong (1401) of the Joseon Dynasty. It is a woodblock-printed book, measuring 38.5cm in length by 22.9cm in width. According to a passage written by a civil minister Gwon Geun, many people including Daedeok, Myeong Ho participated in the woodcut operation, and Yun Mo was charge of it. It is noticeable that the sutra was published by order of King Taejo when the nation was encouraging Confucianism while curbing Buddhism. This is a valuable source that contains the complete contents of Suramagma Sutra.
