Description
Beophwagyeong for short, Saddharma-pundarika sutra is the basic sutra of the Cheontae Order, one of sects of Buddhism, and its main idea is that everyone can be a Buddha. It had the widest circulation among published Buddhist scriptures following the Three Dynasties period and along with the Hwaeom Order, one of the divisions of Buddhism, it exerted an important effect upon Buddhism in Korea. This sutra was made by Prince Hyoryeongdaegun, the second son of King Taejong, together with Prince Anpyeong, the third son of King Sejong in the 30th year of Sejong's reign (1448). This book combines the 4th to 7th volumes into one. It is a woodblock-printed book, measuring 29.5cm in length by 17.8cm in width. The sutra contains Byeonsangdo, a picture symbolizing Buddhist scripture, and at the end of the 7th volume, Prince Anpyeong recorded the details of making this woodcut edition. Its elaborate carving technique and excellent handwriting increase its value, and it is an important source that can confirm the style of handwriting of Prince Anpyeongdaegun, one of the most noted calligraphers of the early Joseon Dynasty.
