Description

This is a landscape and figure painting of the famous painter Kim Je (1524~1593) of mid Joseon. It was painted on silk with a diagonal composition and it measures 46cm wide by 11cm long. He was the son of Kim An-ro (1481~1537), who was a famous writer known by Yongcheondamjeokgi, and worked as a painter with his bother Kim Gi (1509~?). It is assumed that it was painted around the late 16th century but the exact year is uncertain. It is clearly depicting a scene where child who is trying to draw the donkey's reins while the donkey resists crossing a bridge. Some branches that appear sharply on the left side, and a pine tree with pointed leaves fill the space from the bottom to the highest point of the picture. The artist applied two touch painting to the obliquely standing peak in the background: first is the touch of India ink that emphasizes the contrast of black and white, second is the Ax-cut Texture Strokes. The composition of this picture slants to the left as a whole due to the pine tree and rock, and the touch depicting the tree and rock reflects the painting style of the Jeolpahwa Group of mid Joseon. This is a typical painting of Kim Je that shows his own pictorial style and the painting style of the Jeolpahwa Group.
