Description
This jar with a wide mouth is 27 cm tall while the diameter of the mouth is 15 cm and that of the base is 9.8 cm. The highlight of this fine-looking jar is at the upper part of the body as it gradually widens from the shoulder. It then gradually narrows leaving a short and small heel. There is a design of vine inside the fish’s mouth. The support for the heel is rounded, with a lotus flower design and the entire body of the jar was coated with white clay using a paste brush. There is a simple design of weeds on the shoulder and large and exotic patterns of lotus flowers are drawn sparsely in the lower part. On the body is a realistic portrayal of two fish and lotus flowers expressed freely using printing, engraving and inlaying techniques. The jar, made in the Goryeo Dynasty, is a masterpiece that combines the urban atmosphere with the unrestrained spirit of the ordinary people that is unique to Buncheong ware. It displays the widest range of decorative techniques among the Buncheong ware discovered so far. The realistic and lofty depiction of lotus flowers and fish reflects superior artistry and provides valuable information for students of Korean pottery.
