Description
Opinion is divided on the foundation of Jeonghyesa Temple. Some say that it was built by State Preceptor Bojo during the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla, and others say that State Preceptor Hyejo founded it. However there is no definite record remaining. It is also called Gosa, which means 'old temple'. It is presumed that Daeungjeon was built in the Joseon Dynasty. It comprises 3-kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) front space and 2-kan side space and it has a hip and gable roof called paljakjibung. The gongpo which supports the eaves of the roof is set up not only on the pillars but also between them. This is known as dapo style, the multi-cluster bracketing style. It also shows the feature of early Joseon that the parts extending to the outside curl up towards the sky. The exterior walls made with wooden boards and the detailed skills used in the building also show the style of this era. The ceiling is decorated with the patterns of the Chinese character 井 (jeong') which conceals the ceiling. The original color of the building is faded though it still preserves the patterns and hues of early Joseon. The hall is regarded as an important asset because it retains dignity that only an old building can have and the varied styles of wooden architecture of the Joseon Dynasty.
