Description
Stele for King Taejong at Heolleung Royal Tomb in Seoul was erected in 1422 to honor the life and achievement of King Taejong (Yi Bang-won, 1367-1422), King Taejo’s fifth son and third monarch of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) who played a significant role in the efforts to lay a solid foundation for the newly established Joseon Dynasty. The epitaph on the stele was composed by Byeon Gye-ryang (1369-1430), a renowned man of letters and official serving in King Taejong’s government. The title of the inscription was calligraphed by his contemporary, calligrapher Gwon Hong (1360-1446), but it is not known who handwrote the main body of the text. Experts regard the inscription to be an important epigraphical source for the study of calligraphy of the early Joseon Period. The stele features a tortoise-shaped pedestal damaged during the Imjin Waeran (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592) and a dragon head remaining in good original condition; thus providing valuable clues as to the influence of the style of Ming China stone steles on those of the early Joseon Period.
