Description

Stele for King Sejong from Yeongneung Royal Tomb Site in Seoul was built in 1452 to honor the life and achievement of King Sejong, the fourth monarch of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) who played a key role in the efforts to establish the political and cultural foundation for the newly launched Joseon Dynasty. The epitaph of the stele was composed by Jeong In-ji (1396-01478), who made a great contribution to the invention of Hangeul, or the Korean writing system, and calligraphed by Prince Anpyeong (1418-1453), King Sejong’s third son who is considered one of the greatest calligraphers of the early Joseon Period. The inscription has been severely damaged over time but has preserved the passage stating that it was written by Jeong In-ji, then Headmaster of the Seonggyungwan National Academy, and Prince Anpyeong according to a royal edict. The capstone of the stele has also preserved its original condition, serving as valuable sources of knowledge on similar memorial steles set up for numerous personalities including early Joseon rulers.
