Description
Heungseon Daewongun built Jagyeongjeon when he rebuilt Gyeongbokgung Palace on the site of Jamidang Hall for Jodaebi (Queen Sinjeong), legal mother of King Gojong. It was burnt down and then rebuilt in 1888, the 25th year of King Gojong’s reign. Jagyeongjeon is a 44- kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) hall for living everyday life and sleeping. Bedrooms called bogandang were made in the northwest to pass the winter season warmly while the daytime was spent in Jagyeongjeon Hall. Cheongyeonru Pavilion, a loft, was made in the southeast to spend summer time in the cool. There were dozens of houses, walls and doors around it, but most of them have disappeared. There only remain the beautiful flower wall engraved with patterns of letters, flowers, butterflies and bamboo, and the chimney of house shape harmoniously engraved with sipjangsaeng, a design of animals and trees that symbolizes longevity. This is the only hall in Gyeongbokgung Palace that contains a royal bedchamber.
