Description

The excavated documents discovered in the secret depository inside the wooden statue of Manjusri bodhisattva in Sangwonsa Temple, Pyeongchang, include two Buddhist scriptures, Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra (The Diamond Sutra) in Ink on White Paper and Saddharmapundarika Sutra (The Lotus Sutra, Volume 6). The first is handwritten in ink on white paper, and contains the text of Vajarcchedika prajnaparamita Sutra (The Diamond Sutra) in its front part and Transcription of Avatamsake Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra) in the rear part. The Diamond Sutra of Sangwonsa Temple, which has no frontispiece, is based on the text translated by Kumarajiva (334-413 CE). Meanwhile, the Lotus Sutra is conjectured to have been printed during the transition from the Goryeo to the Joseon Dynasty, towards the end of the fourteenth century, using woodblocks that had been carved by Goryeo artisans while the dynasty was under the political leadership of the powerful courtier Choe I (1356-1426). The text is based on the old Song edition annotated by Jiehuan (1119-1125).
