Description
The Mural Painting in Daeungbojeon Hall of Unmunsa Temple in Cheongdo, produced on a large clay plaster wall, depicts Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion and mercy, and Bodhidharma, the first Chan patriarch in China, standing side by side against a background of high rugged rocky mountain peaks. It is the only extant example of a painting in which Avalokitesvara and Bodhidharma are depicted together in the same space, representing the unique position of Unmunsa Temple in the history of Korean Buddhism and the tradition of the Gajisan School of Zen it has maintained. The expression of the bejeweled crown worn by Avalokitesvara and the clothes worn by the young seeker of the truth Sudhana suggests that the mural was painted between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century.
