Description

Tongmyeongjeon Hall was the king's living quarters in the Changgyeonggung Palace and was also used as a banquet hall. Tongmyeongjeon had been burnt down several times since it was first built in 1484, the 15th year of King Seongjong’ reign, to be rebuilt for the last time in 1834, the 34th year of King Sunjo’s reign. It comprises 7-kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) front space and 4-kan side space, and it has a hip and gable roof, called paljakjibung, with no ridge on top. The gongpo which supports the eaves of the roof is set up not only on the pillars but also between them. This building style is known as dapo style, which shows simple but graceful feature of mid-Joseon architecture. On the left side of the building are a stone-railed pond and a spring girded with round stones. A beautiful garden is laid out behind the building. These all contribute to creating a well-balanced and harmonious atmosphere. Tongmyeongjeon, the biggest inner palace building in Changgyeonggung, retains the grandeur and style of the 19th-century royal architecture.
