Description

Junghwajeon was the main hall of the Deoksugung Palace, where King Gojong held official functions and received his subjects and foreign envoys. Junghwamun Gate was the main entrance to Junghwajeon Hall. The hall and the gate, which were both constructed in 1902, were burnt down in 1904 and rebuilt in 1906, the 43rd year of the reign of King Gojong. Junghwajeon Hall comprises 5-kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) front space and 4-kan side space, and it has a hip and gable roof called paljakjibung. The gongpo which supports the eaves of the roof is set up not only on the pillars but also between them. This building style is known as dapo style, the multi-cluster bracketing style. The bracketing structure was thinner and more delicate compared with that of the previous period. Datjib (a carved wooden canopy), which is installed on the ceiling above the throne, adds the dignity of royalty. Junghwamun Gate, with 3-kan front space and 2-kan side space, is architecturally similar to Junghwajeon, including the multi-cluster bracket structure and hipped and gabled roof. The gate originally had corridors on both sides. At present, however, only a small part of the eastern corridor remains. Both the hall and the gate show characteristics of the closing days of the Joseon Dynasty.
