Description

The Stone Seated Sakyamuni Buddha Triad of Jangansa Temple in Gijang was made by a team of monk-sculptors led by Nogwon, who was active during the mid-seventeenth century. The statues are known to be among the earliest examples of sculpture made of zeolite. The triad consists of Shakyamuni, Buddha, the principal figure, flanked by Bhaisajyaguru and Amitabha. As it is clearly known who made them and when, the statues can be used as criteria for the study of Korean Buddhist sculpture of the mid and late seventeenth century. Made at the time when zeolite began to gain popularity among Buddhist sculptors, they also provide important clues about the materials used to make Korean Buddhist sculptures in the seventeenth century.
