Description
The Royal Certificate of a Meritorious Subject Issued to Jeong Jong was issued in 1467 by King Sejo (r. 1455-1468), the seventh ruler of the Joseon Dynasty (1390-1910), to honor the meritorious service provided by Jeong Jong (1417-1476) during the Rebellion of Yi Si-ae in 1467. As one of the earliest such documents issued by the Joseon Dynasty, it is generally regarded as an important source of knowledge on the custom of honoring meritorious subjects during the early Joseon period. The other document (Red Certificate of the Successful Candidate in the Military Examination) was issued in 1442, also making it one of the earliest examples of a document of its kind. It is also valuable for the light it sheds on the practice of drafting formal letters to announce the decisions made by early Joseon rulers, as it was issued in the period when the title and format of such letters was promoted from wangji to gyoji.
