Description
This painting of the Rebirth through Buddhanusmrti enshrined in Eunhaesa Temple depicts a scene in which a group of Buddhist followers on board the dragon boat of wisdom is guided by the bodhisattvas Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta to the land of bliss where they are welcomed by Amitabha Buddha. The painting also features a sublime landscape containing a lotus pond in the blissful land together with those reborn in the Buddhist utopia, treasure trees, and the bird of eternal joy. The painting was stolen from Simgeomdang Hall of Eunhaesa Temple years ago, and was only recovered very recently. The artist’s postscript has been lost, but the painting retains a record showing that it was produced in 1750, which means it is one the earliest paintings of its kind produced during the late Joseon period.
