Description

The painting of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in Daeungjeon Hall of Heungguksa Temple in Yeosu is known to be the only extant work completed by attaching a painting on paper to the wall behind the main altar of a dharma hall. The expression of the “treasure hair” draped upon the Bodhisattva’s shoulders, the garments worn by the young truth seeker Sudhana, and the shape of the ritual ewer are characteristic elements of Korean Buddhist painting of the seventeenth century. It is a rare Buddhist painting due to its unusual composition, in which Avalokitesvara and Sudhana are arranged with the ewer upon a lotus flower pedestal.
