Description
Miwon gyehoedo (Gathering of Officials of the Censor-general) depicts a meeting wherein members of the same group promoted mutual friendship and shared a love for poetic works. This painting contains that scene and measures 49 centimeters wide and 57 centimeters long. It is uncertain who drew this painting, whose title is written on the upper side. Miwon is another name for Saganwon (Office of the Censor-general), so this painting describes the meeting of the members of this office. In the middle part, the meeting scene is drawn finely with the landscape as background. There are two pine trees on the hill in a near view, with the meeting scene under the trees peaking behind it. In addition, there is a boat on the river on the left side. The painter wrote the participants’ names, titles, and places of origin at the bottom. The poem written by Seong Se-chang at the top of this painting says that it was painted in 1540 (35th year of King Jungjong’s reign). The composition of this painting is slanted to the right, showing the typical style of the paintings made in the early Joseon Period. The background of the landscape is depicted to be larger than the scene of the meeting, displaying the trend of valuing the natural environment. As the oldest one among existing works, this painting shows the style of An Gyeon’s painting and gyehoedo (painting of the gathering of officials).
