Description
Hagwan gyehoedo (Gathering of Military Officials) depicts a meeting of officials of Hagwan, another name for Byeongjo (Ministry of Military Affairs). Drawn on silk, it measures 59 centimeters wide and 97 centimeters long. This 1541 (36th year of King Jungjong’s reign) painting is divided into three parts. Its title is written at the top, and the scene of the meeting is drawn -- with the landscape as backdrop -- in the middle part. The participants’ names, titles, and places of origin are written at the bottom, but there are a few words that cannot be read because it is too old. The poem written by Seong Se-chang, a civil official of the mid-Joseon Period, on the left says that it was made in the autumn of 1541. The composition and size of the painting are very similar to those of Miwon gyehoedo (Gathering of Officials of the Censor-general) with Seong Se-chang’s Poem (Treasure No. 868), and it follows the style of An Gyeon’s paintings. The description of the landscape is slanted to the right, and the mountains and hills are depicted with short lines and spots. It is an important material for studying the style of the landscape painting and gyehoedo (painting of the gathering of officials) of the early Joseon Period.
