Description
As the basic sutra of the Jogye Order, Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra (Diamond Sutra) is one of the most widely read sutra in Korea along with Maha prajnaparamita hridaya Sutra (Heart Sutra). This sutra was published in 1357 (sixth year of the reign of King Gongmin of the Goryeo Dynasty) by two monks, Jiseon and Johwan of Deogunsa Temple, at the request of Kim Jeo who was living in Jeonju. This scroll of the sutra measures 32cm long and 2,440cm wide. In the fore part is an illustration summarizing the contents of this sutra, followed by two parts: sentences from various Buddhist scriptures and passages that define the purpose and procedure for making this sutra. The letters of this sutra were written in different sizes in order to distinguish the main texts from the footnotes, thereby promoting easier understanding of the scripture.
