Description

Gonyeo jeondo (Kunyu quantu in Chinese, Complete Map of the World) was originally developed by Jesuit Missionary Ferdinand Verbiest (also known as Nan Huairen in Chinese, 1623-1688) in 1674 in Beijing, China. These printing woodblocks were made in 1860 (11th year of the reign of King Cheoljong of the Joseon Dynasty) in order to publish this map in Joseon. The woodblocks, kept at the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, were produced based on the second edition of Gonyeo jeondo, which was published in Guangdong in 1856. Originally, there were four woodblocks, both sides of which are engraved with the map, but only three of them remain today. Each woodblock is 68 cm wide and 177.5cm long, and part of the map is 51cm wide and 144cm long. The state of preservation is relatively good, displaying the excellent engraving techniques of the late Joseon Period.
