Description
This book which had long been a foundation for the Korean Buddhist precepts consists of the text of the Brahmajala Sutra translated into Chinese by a great Later Qin monk Kumarajiva (334–413) and annotation by a Song monk Hui Yin (fl. 11th c.). The book opens with three prefaces written by Shanwuwai Wei and others in 1298 which are followed by another preface written in larger scripts by Hui Yin in 1095. The annotation is placed between the prefaces and the main text of the sutra and the notes are put below each related passage, written in small scripts and arranged in two rows. The book containing a set of precepts Buddhist practitioners were required to observe with commentaries put below important passages in it. Preserved in good condition and known to have been printed with woodblocks carved during the late Goryeo Period (918-1392) on the basis of a Yuan edition, the book is regarded as a rare and very valuable source of knowledge.
