Description
As the primary dictionary of rhymes, this was usually used by students applying for the civil service examination. This book was named after Yebu, the name of the ministry managing the civil service examination. The dictionary was handed down in China since the Song and Yuan Dynasties and imported to Korea. Although dictionaries with similar function, such as Dongguk jeongun (Standard Rhymes of the Eastern State), have been published during the Joseon Period, this was the most popular dictionary and was used most frequently. Carved by Park Dong-bu in 1679 (5th year of the reign of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty), the 162 woodblocks for printing this book consist of four parts -- preface, body, dictionary, and conclusion -- and measure 46.2cm long, 20.5cm wide, and 1.8cm thick. Only a few editions of this book remain today, and these woodblocks are the only ones that have been preserved perfectly without any missing page.
