Description
Bulseol daebo bumo eunjunggyeong (Sakyamuni’s Teaching on Parental Love) is a Buddhist scripture that gives a discourse of Buddha about the obligations of people to their parents. The woodblocks for printing this book were carved at Gwangbeopsa Temple in Daeseongsan Mountain of Pyeongyang in 1454 (second year of the reign of King Danjong of the Joseon Dynasty). Measuring 23.5cm long and 901.3cm wide, the book was originally made in scroll type by connecting the pieces of paper but was changed into a folding type like a folding screen. Today, it is preserved in scroll type, and the folded parts have been worn down. The main text of this book includes poems about the ten examples of parents’ love and describes them with illustrations. In addition, words and illustrations describe another eight kinds of parental love, including the cases wherein people repay their parents’ love aside from the opposite cases. Among the existing versions of Sakyamuni’s Teaching on Parental Love published in the Joseon Period, this book is the oldest one; the illustrations are also more delicate compared to other versions made during the Goryeo Dynasty.
