Description
This painting, measuring 410 cm long and 273 cm wide, depicts the scene of Buddha giving a sermon at the Vulture Peak and the Four Guardian Kings, the bodhisattvas, and his disciples surrounding the Buddha at the center. The Buddha is wearing a robe draped over the left shoulder only. His face is round, and his features, ears, eyes, mouth, and nose are rather small for his robust, voluptuous body. The Four Guardian Kings, bodhisattvas, and disciples are also voluptuous like the Buddha. Bright and soft neutral tints are mainly used in this painting. It was painted in 1681 (seventh year of the reign of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty). This painting is rather big but shows well-organized composition, displaying the characteristics of Buddhist paintings made in the mid-17th century.
