Description
These two portraits depict Bak Dong-hyeong (1695-1739), who played an important part in arresting Bak Pil-hyeon, a leader of the rebels who rose up against the throne in 1728 under the leadership of Yi In-jwa (?-1728) and Jeong Hui-ryang (?-1728). In recognition of his distinguished service during that turbulent time, he was honored with the title of Meritorious Subject, while the Chungju Bak clan to which he belonged was honored with that of Meritorious Clan. Both the full-length seated portrait painted in 1728 and the half-length portrait in 1751 are based on the same draft, but they are different in that the first is preserved on the original mount complete with decorative tassels, while the second is placed on a new mount. The cases seem to have been made at the time the portraits were completed.
