Description
Ksitigarbha pranidhana Sutra tells of how Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva made great vows to rescue sentient beings. Originally translated by Fadeng of the Tang Dynasty, this sutra was transcribed by Buddhist monk Haeyeon in 1440 (22nd year of the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty). It is written in ink on white paper with the shape of a folding screen, and all three volumes are stored in a box wrapped with silk. Volume 1 is 15.5 cm wide and 42.3 cm long, and Volumes 2 and 3 are 15.5 cm wide and 49.3 cm long. Its title is written in gold based on red on dark blue cover decorated with silver flower designs. At the end of the book is a record stating that 22 donors, including Choe Cheon-gyeong, pray that they can repay the kindness of heaven, earth, parents, and country, and that they can be born in heaven after death. This is an especially important material in the research on the transcription of Buddhist scriptures of the early Joseon Period, since it is made by commoners and lower classes unlike the usual Buddhist transcriptions, which were published by royal and noble families during the Goryeo Dynasty.
