Description

The Shurangama Sutra (Sutra of the Heroic One) is one of the texts that all Buddhist monks are required to study. The sutra emphasizes the importance of going beyond intellectually understanding Buddha’s teachings to assimilate them such that the seeker of enlightenment can draw strength from them. The publishing of the Shurangama Sutra in Hangeul was ordered by King Sejong in 1449 (31st year of King Sejong’s reign) and was completed in 1461 (7th year of King Sejo’s reign). Senior monks and prominent scholars were involved in the project. This book was printed on mulberry paper using eulhae types, measuring 24.5 cm wide and 37.9 cm long. Volumes 1, 2 and 5, 7 and 8, 7-8 and 9-10, and 4 and 7-8 are designated as Treasure Nos. 760, 761, 762, 763, and 973, respectively; Volume 6 is kept at the Tenri University Museum in Japan. This book influenced the editions translated into Korean at Gangyeong Dogam (Directorate of Buddhist Publications); it also helps to tell when the editions in eulhae types were printed, which is not certain.
