Description
Saddharmapundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra) is the principal scripture of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism. The main idea of the book is that the way to become a Buddha is open to everyone. Along with the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra), this sutra was a principal scripture that wielded great influence on the establishment of Buddhist thoughts in Korea. This book measures 22.3 cm wide and 34.5 cm long, with Volumes 5 to 7 printed into one book on mulberry paper using woodblocks carved in 1470. According to the record at the end of this book, it was published in 1488 (19th year of King Seongjong’s reign) in order to pray for the soul of Princess Sunsuk, who was a daughter of King Seongjong and Queen Jeonghyeon. It is the same edition as Volumes 6 and 7, designated as Treasure No. 936 and regarded as a valuable material for the study of Buddhist religion in the royal family of the early Joseon Period.
