Description
The Celadon Incense Burner in the Shape of a Three-legged Cauldron with Goblin Design in Relief was made in Goryeo in the twelfth century, and is thought to be a copy of an original metal vessel. The vessel consists of a mouth, body, and legs that were attached to each other after making them separately, and features a curved neck, protruded bands, a pair of handles placed on opposite sides of the mouth, legs, and a tiny incised fret pattern, faithfully reflecting the details of the original metal ritual vessel. It is distinguished by its greenish blue glaze , elaborately carved decorative designs, traces of slight damage to the mouth, and brown blotches created during the oxidation firing process. Celadon incense burners such as this are conjectured to have been made in the kilns of Gangjin in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Although several Goryeo celadon incense burners are included on the list of state-designated cultural heritages, this particular one is held to be superior to the rest due to the excellent condition of the glaze, the high quality of the clay, and the exquisite rendering of the decorative design.
