Description

Saddharmapundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra) is the principal scripture of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism. The main idea of the book is that the way to become a Buddha is open to everyone. Along with the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra), this sutra was a principal scripture that wielded great influence on the establishment of Buddhist thoughts in Korea. In 1405 (fifth year of King Taejong’s reign), Seong Dal-saeng and Seong Gae transcribed the sutra to pray for the soul of their deceased father, and a Buddhist monk named Sinmun carved woodblocks to print this book. Four volumes are printed into one book on mulberry paper, with the book measuring 16 cm wide and 26.8 cm long. The blue silk cover remains together with the book, and the title is written in gold on cinnabar red ground.
