Description
Volumes 4-7 of Saddharmapundarika Sutra (The Lotus Sutra), one of the most important scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism, is one of the seven books printed with woodblocks carved based on the manuscripts copied by brothers Seong Dal-saeng (1376-1444) and Seong Gae (?-1440) at Ansimsa Temple in Dosolsan Mountain, Jeolla-do in 1405. On the left of the frontispiece is an explanatory note informing readers that a woman from the Jeong family hired an artist for the scriptural illustration as a prayer for her dead husband, Wang, to have a safe journey to the pure land and commissioned wood engravers to produce xylographic blocks to publish and circulate the scripture. The book also contains at the end a postscript written by Neo-Confucian scholar-statesman Gwon Geun (1352-1409) and which serves as a valuable source for bibliographical studies and regarding the publication of Buddhist scriptures in the early Joseon Period.
