Description

This book is a collection of six Buddhist sutras, Diamond Sutra, Conducts and Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, Shurangama Mantra, Amitabha Sutra, Universal Gateway of Avalokitasvara Bodhisattva, and Hymns of Avalokitesvara, that relished wide circulation among people during the early Joseon Period (1392-1910). The book, printed with woodblocks on mulberry paper, is 29 centimeters in length and 17.4 centimeters in width. According to a postscript attached at the end of the Diamond Sutra, it was printed in 1440 with woodblocks carved at Yeongjeam Hermitage of Hwaaksan Mountain. An introduction written by Kim Su-on (1410-1481), a renowned scholar-statesman of early Joseon, shows that it is one of 29 books printed in 1472 with woodblocks preserved in Buddhist temples across Korea then through a project led by Queen Dowager Insu (1437-1504) praying for the peaceful rest of the spirits of the four deceased kings, Sejo, Uigyeong, Yejong and Inseong and longevity of the incumbent ruler, King Seongjong, his consort, and Grand Royal Queen Dowager. Another book printed with the same set of woodblocks, now designated as Treasure No. 793, was discovered at Sangwonsa Temple of Odaesan Mountain.
