Description
The Printing Woodblocks for Yesusiwangsaengchiljaeuichanyo were re-engraved at Bowonsa Temple in Gayasan Mountain, Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do in 1577 (the 10th year of the reign of King Seonjo), and are currently kept at Gaesimsa Temple Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do. Yesu siwangsaeng chiljaeeui chanyo is a collection of writings about the Yesujae rite, which was performed to secure the easy passage of the deceased into eternity based on the charitable deeds they performed while alive. These plates kept at Gaesimsa Temple contain various orations for rites. These are composed of 55 chapters in 26 plates, including 42 chapters of the main text, ’Yesu cheonwang tongyi’, and ’Socheong sajaso’. Compared to their counterparts made in 1576 at Gwangheungsa Temple in Andong, which feature the same composition and number of characters per line, Chapter 31 (Yesumun, about the procedure of a Buddhist rite) is missing. Chapter 42 includes contents about the names of the ordinary people who took part in the work and other records about the production of the woodblock. These wooden plates are carved from a single piece of wood of diverse shapes of sizes . Their value largely stem from the fact that they are the oldest woodblocks made for the book about the Yesujae rite published before the Imjin War.
