Description

Saddharmapundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra) is the principal scripture of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism. The main idea of the book is that the way to become a Buddha is open to everyone. Along with the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra), this sutra was a principal scripture that wielded great influence on the establishment of Buddhist thoughts in Korea. This folded book contains Volume 3 of the seven volumes of Saddharmapundarika Sutra, and it is said to have been found inside a Buddha statue. The covers were removed when the book was put in the statue, but it has been preserved in good condition. Printed on mulberry paper using woodblocks, this book measures 11 cm wide and 32.9 cm long. The purpose of the book’s publication and the exact date are not known, since the last page containing the information is missing. Nonetheless, it is assumed to have been published around 1400 since it has the same font style as the Shurangama Sutra (Sutra of the Heroic One, Treasure No. 759) whose woodblocks were carved by Buddhist Monk Sinchong by the order of King Taejo in 1401 (first year of the reign of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty).
