Description
Saddharmapundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra) is the principal scripture of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism. The main idea of the book is that the way to become a Buddha is open to everyone. Along with the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra), this sutra was a principal scripture that wielded great influence on the establishment of Buddhist thoughts in Korea. In 1405 (fifth year of King Taejong’s reign), Seong Dal-saeng and Seong Gae transcribed the sutra to pray for the soul of their deceased father, and a Buddhist monk named Sinmun carved woodblocks to print this book. Three volumes are printed into one book on mulberry paper, with the book measuring 30.5 cm wide and 29 cm long. There is a frontispiece at the front page of this book, and it was printed through the donation from a man named Jeong in order to pray for the soul of deceased King U of the Goryeo Dynasty. The frontispiece is regarded as an outstanding artwork, since the guardian deities in this painting are large and elaborate.
