Description
The White Porcelain Seal of Saongwon was a seal used by the Saongwon, the government agency of the Joseon dynasty responsible for the cooking and culinary affairs of the royal court of Joseon. Unlike state seals, whose knob was attached with an ornamental string, this ceramic seal has a lion knob, showing similarities with white porcelain ink droppers from the same period. The elaborate carving of the knob and the use of indigo and copper-red for decoration show that the seal was made by a master potter of late Joseon. This rare seal is highly regarded for its historical significance as it proves that ceramic seals – as well as metal or stone ones - were actually used by the government of the Joseon dynasty. The seal is regarded as a very valuable cultural heritage of the royal court of Joseon as it is a rare example of the official seal of the Saongwon and the only ceramic one found to date.
