Description
Saddharmapundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra) is the principal scripture of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism. The main idea of the book is that the way to become a Buddha is open to everyone. Along with the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra), this sutra was a principal scripture that wielded great influence on the establishment of Buddhist thoughts in Korea. Translated by Kumarajiva of the Later Qin, Volumes 5 and 6 of this sutra were transcribed in silver on brown oak paper to form a folding screen-type book measuring 11.6 cm wide and 30.6 cm long. Although the frontispiece illustration and printing record are now missing, the main text and the front and back covers remain intact. On its front cover, a gold and silver-colored flower decoration circled the title of sutra. Based on the font style and decoration on the front cover, the publication period is assumed to be around the 14th century.
