Description

Daepaeng Gohoe (Great Dishes and High Gatherings) is one of the last calligraphic works produced by Kim Jeong-hui (1786-1856) in 1856, the year of his death. Created as a gift for a person known by the pen-name of Haengnong (Apricot Farmer), the work consists of a short poem of fourteen Chinese characters written in couplets in clerical script on two sheets of powdered Tang paper (bundangji). The poem was inspired by the work titled Family Banquet in the Middle of Autumn, written by the Ming poet Wu Zongqian. The poem reads: “Great dishes are made of soybean curd, cucumber, ginger and cabbage; while high gatherings are composed of a man and his wife, sons and daughters, and grandchildren. (大烹豆腐瓜薑菜」高會夫妻兒女孫) As if to match the content of the poem, which praises the joy found in the mundane aspects of daily life, the calligraphic work displays delightfully simple, artless strokes that reflect the (great master artist’s mature view of the world and the art of his last days. The work is generally regarded as a crucial part of the heritage of Korean calligraphy not only for its artistic merit but also for its close connection with the life and achievements of Kim Jeong-hui.
